Volumetric Witness Archive: Recording the Story of Holocaust Survivor Gidon Lev

Berlin, 16. June – In its mission to preserve voices of living history through immersive technology, Volucap has now volumetrically recorded the testimony of Gidon Lev, a Czechoslovak-born Israeli Holocaust survivor, author, and public speaker. This recording is part of the growing Volumetric Witness Archive, created in partnership with the Film University Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF, which seeks to make historical memory experientially accessible for generations to come.

Gidon Lev is one of the survivors of the Theresienstadt concentration camp, where he was imprisoned as a child. He lost most of his extended family in the Holocaust. After the war, he emigrated to Israel, served in the Israeli military, and built a life dedicated to education, civic engagement, and remembrance. In recent years, his story has gained international attention through his memoir The True Adventures of Gidon Lev, co-written with Julie Gray, and through his unique voice on social media, where he continues to speak out against antisemitism, hatred, and historical denial.

At the Volucap studio, Gidon Lev’s testimony was recorded using the company’s high-resolution volumetric recording system—able to digitally preserve over 3000 megapixels of detail per frame. In this way, not only his words but also his gestures, expressions, and presence are archived in lifelike 3D. Through VR headsets, viewers will be able to encounter Gidon Lev’s story as though standing in the same room with him.

This volumetric archive marks a new frontier in educational storytelling. Designed for use in extended reality (XR) applications, the recordings give future generations the chance to engage with personal history in a deeply emotional and human way. Students and educators alike will soon be able to explore Lev’s experiences within virtual learning environments—bringing history to life far beyond traditional classrooms.

As the world continues to seek new ways to remember and reflect, Volucap’s work demonstrates the powerful role technology can play in shaping collective memory—authentically, respectfully, and accessibly.

This technology is so remarkable. But I must emphasize it: Whats more remarkable than anything else, any of the technology, is the people working with the equipment, the people doing this film. Who care.
